General & Basic Questions

Solar panels on your roof capture sunlight and convert it into DC (direct current) electricity using photovoltaic cells. An inverter then converts this into AC (alternating current) — the type of power your home actually uses.

This power first runs your appliances directly. Any extra electricity you generate but don't use is sent back to the grid (in an on-grid or hybrid setup) or stored in a battery (in an off-grid or hybrid setup) for later use.

On-Grid: Connected to your local DISCOM's power grid. No battery needed — surplus power is exported to the grid and credited via net metering. Most affordable option, but doesn't work during a grid outage (for safety reasons).

Off-Grid: Fully independent, with batteries storing your power. Ideal for areas with unreliable or no grid connection, but batteries add significant cost.

Hybrid: Combines both — grid-connected with battery backup. You get net metering benefits and power during outages, at a higher upfront cost than on-grid.

As a rule of thumb, one kW of solar panels needs roughly 80–110 sq. ft. of shadow-free roof area, depending on the panel technology used.

So a 3kW system typically needs about 250–330 sq. ft., and a 5kW system needs about 400–550 sq. ft. Our site survey confirms the exact figure for your roof, accounting for shading from water tanks, trees, or neighbouring buildings.

Savings & Financials

Most homeowners cut their electricity bill by 70–90% once solar is installed and net metering is active — the exact figure depends on your system size, roof sunlight hours, and how your usage compares to your generation.

Many households with a well-sized system see their monthly bill drop to just the minimum fixed charge levied by the DISCOM. We'll model your actual savings using your last 12 months of bills before you commit to anything.

Net metering connects your solar system to the grid through a bi-directional meter that tracks both the power you draw from the grid and the power you export to it.

At the end of each billing cycle, your DISCOM nets these two figures against each other. If you exported more than you consumed, the surplus units typically carry forward as a credit toward future bills (policies vary slightly by state). It's what turns your rooftop into a mini power plant that works even when you're not home to use the electricity yourself.

Yes. The Government of India runs the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme, offering a central financial subsidy for residential rooftop solar installations, in addition to any state-level incentives that may apply in your area.

03 — Living with solar

Maintenance & Performance

Panels still generate power on cloudy days — just at a reduced rate, typically 10–25% of peak output, since they rely on daylight rather than direct, unobstructed sun.

Rain is actually helpful: it naturally washes dust and grime off the panels, often giving you a small efficiency boost right after. Monsoon months will show lower generation on your dashboard, but this evens out over the year, and your system sizing already accounts for seasonal variation.

Solar panels have no moving parts, so maintenance is minimal. The main task is keeping them free of dust, bird droppings, and leaves, since heavy grime can reduce output.

We recommend cleaning with plain water and a soft cloth or sponge every 2–4 weeks in dry seasons, and less often during the monsoon. Avoid harsh detergents or high-pressure jets. We also suggest an annual professional check-up of wiring, mounting structure, and inverter health.

Solar panels are built to last 25+ years, with most manufacturers offering a performance warranty guaranteeing around 80–90% output even after 25 years of use.

Inverters have a shorter lifespan of roughly 10–15 years and will likely need one replacement during your system's life — a cost worth budgeting for, though modern inverters are increasingly reliable and often carry their own multi-year warranty.

04 — Getting it done

Installation & Safety

Start to finish, most residential systems are commissioned within 2–4 weeks. Here's roughly how that breaks down:

Site survey & design (1–2 days) → Approvals & DISCOM paperwork (7–15 days, runs in parallel with procurement) → Physical installation (1–3 days for most home-sized systems) → Inspection & net meter installation by DISCOM (a few days) → Commissioning, after which your system is live.

Approval timelines vary by state and DISCOM, and we keep you updated at every stage.

Not when it's done correctly. Our mounting structures use weatherproof, corrosion-resistant anchoring, and every roof penetration point is sealed with industrial-grade sealant to prevent leaks.

For most RCC roofs, we can even use non-penetrative ballasted mounts that don't require drilling at all. We also assess your roof's structural condition during the site survey to flag any pre-existing issues before installation begins — and our installation warranty covers roof-related workmanship.
